How to Link Centrelink to myGov — and Why It Matters for Your Finances

Managing your finances in retirement — or at any stage of life — involves keeping on top of a lot of moving parts. One of the simplest and most important steps Australians can take is linking their Centrelink account to their myGov account. Yet many people either haven’t done it, aren’t sure how, or don’t realise just how much easier it can make their lives.

At MLS Financial, we regularly help clients in Penrith and across Western Sydney navigate Centrelink and the Age Pension — and linking Centrelink to myGov is one of the first things we recommend.

What Is myGov?

MyGov is a secure Australian Government online portal that allows you to access a range of government services in one place. Once you create a myGov account, you can link it to services including Centrelink, Medicare, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and more — all under a single login.

Think of it as a central hub for your government dealings, accessible from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Why Should You Link Centrelink to myGov?

Linking your Centrelink account to myGov gives you direct, secure access to your Centrelink information online — without needing to visit a Service Centre or wait on hold on the phone. Here’s why it matters:

1. Manage Your Payments Online

Once linked, you can view your payment details, check upcoming payment dates, and see your payment history — all online, at any time. For retirees receiving the Age Pension or other Centrelink payments, this means no more uncertainty about when your next payment is due or how much to expect.

2. Report Your Income Easily

If you or your partner receive Centrelink payments and are required to report income, linking to myGov allows you to submit your income reports online or via the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. This is far quicker and more convenient than calling Centrelink or visiting in person.

3. Update Your Details Without the Wait

Changed your address, bank account details, or relationship status? Through myGov, you can update your personal details directly in your Centrelink record — saving you time and reducing the risk of payment delays caused by outdated information.

4. Access Your Centrelink Letters Online

When Centrelink sends you correspondence — such as notices about your Age Pension review, changes to your payment rate, or requests for information — these letters are delivered directly to your myGov inbox. No more waiting for mail or worrying about missing important notices.

5. Keep Track of Your Centrelink Debts and Obligations

If Centrelink ever identifies an overpayment or requires you to provide documentation, you’ll be notified through your myGov inbox and can manage the process online. Staying on top of your obligations helps avoid complications down the track.

How to Link Centrelink to myGov — Step by Step

If you don’t yet have a myGov account, you’ll need to create one first at my.gov.au. Once your account is set up, follow these steps to link Centrelink:

  1. Sign in to your myGov account
  2. Select “Link a service” from your myGov home screen
  3. Choose Centrelink from the list of available services
  4. Follow the prompts — you’ll be asked to verify your identity using details Centrelink already holds, such as your Customer Reference Number (CRN), date of birth, and information from a recent letter or payment
  5. Once verified, Centrelink will appear on your myGov home screen and you’ll have immediate access

If you run into trouble during the process, Services Australia has support available via phone, and many Service Centres can assist you in person.

What About the myGov App?

The myGov app is available for both iOS and Android devices and makes accessing your linked services even easier from your phone. You can set up a PIN or use biometric login (face or fingerprint recognition) for quick, secure access. For older Australians who prefer using a smartphone, the app is a particularly convenient option.

A Note on Security

We understand that some clients — particularly those less familiar with online services — have concerns about the security of using myGov. These are valid concerns, and it’s worth knowing that myGov uses multi-factor authentication to protect your account. This means that even if someone knew your password, they would still need access to your registered phone or email to log in.

That said, it’s important to be aware of myGov scams. The Australian Government will never send you a text or email with a link asking you to sign in to myGov. If you receive a message like this, do not click the link — it is a scam. Always access myGov by typing the address directly into your browser.
